Introduction Welcome to the 7 Pillars of Health! This book will introduce you to the seven basic pillars of a healthy lifestyle. It is designed to become your road map for health for the rest of your life. This book is different from other health books for several key reasons. First, most other popular health writers are not medical doctors. I am. I have been a medical doctor since 1984 and have been board certified in family practice since 1987. I treat patients and operate a thriving medical practice in Orlando, Florida. If you come to my medical office during the week you will see me in a white lab coat with stethoscope draped around my neck. I will be reviewing patients files and meeting with patients. I dedicate my life to helping people become healthy. Living a healthy life is not just theory and research for me; its fact. Because I have made my career as a medical doctor, the advice I give in this book is not just something I picked up from the Internet or from other medical professionals. These are not the seven “fads” of health or the seven “theories” of health, but the seven pillars of health. Backed up by medical research and my actual experiences with real problems and real people that span over two decades of practice, these seven pillars have contributed health and freedom to thousands of people. For the past ten years the 7 Pillars of Health has been the basis of my medical practice and my ministry. I have taught these seven pillars to some of the biggest ministries in the United States, including the staffs of Joyce Meyer Ministries, Kenneth Copeland Ministries, Benny Hinn Ministries, and John Hagee Ministries, as well as in dozens of churches. Many hundreds of people have told me of major improvements in their health just from attending the one- or two-day seminars. This book includes information from those seminars, plus much more, and presents a user-friendly, easy-to-read, positive handbook for health.
What is health?
The word health refers to a state of complete emotional and physical well-being. Healthcare exists to help people maintain this optimal state of health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), healthcare costs in the United States were $3.5 trillionTrusted Source in 2017.
However, despite this expenditure, people in the U.S. have a lower life expectancy than people in other developed countries. This is due to a variety of factors, including access to healthcare and lifestyle choices.
Good health is central to handling stress and living a longer, more active life. In this article, we explain the meaning of good health, the types of health a person needs to consider, and how to preserve good health.
In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO)Trusted Source defined health with a phrase that modern authorities still apply.
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
In 1986, the WHOTrusted Source made further clarifications:
“A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”
This means that health is a resource to support an individual’s function in wider society, rather than an end in itself. A healthful lifestyle provides the means to lead a full life with meaning and purpose.
In 2009, researchers publishing inThe LancetTrusted Source defined health as the ability of a body to adapt to new threats and infirmities.
They base this definition on the idea that the past few decades have seen modern science take significant strides in the awareness of diseases by understanding how they work, discovering new ways to slow or stop them, and acknowledging that an absence of pathology may not be possible.
